Why 848?
The Meaning Behind Beyond the Kingpin
Three numbers. One powerful history. A story that extends beyond both.
The name 848: Beyond the Kingpin was inspired by Richard Peña's own explanation of the number that came to define a significant chapter of his life.
In federal law, Title 21, United States Code, Section 848 addresses Continuing Criminal Enterprise (CCE), commonly referred to as the federal drug kingpin statute.
The law concerns individuals who organize, supervise, or manage continuing criminal drug enterprises. Depending on the circumstances, convictions under this statute carry severe penalties, including lengthy imprisonment and, in certain cases, mandatory life sentences.
For Richard, the number 848 represents far more than a legal provision. It symbolizes a turning point; a confrontation with the consequences of the past and the profound realities of incarceration.
Beyond the Kingpin
The word kingpin evokes images of power, influence, notoriety, and the criminal justice system. Yet no single label can capture the entirety of a human life.
Beyond that designation exists a man with a history, a family, personal relationships, spiritual convictions, and a continuing capacity for reflection and change.
The name of this website does not seek to erase the past, dispute the seriousness of criminal conduct, or diminish the experiences of those affected.
Instead, it asks whether an individual can be held accountable for past decisions while also being understood through the person he is striving to become.
Reclaiming the Narrative:
Through digital storytelling, 848: Beyond the Kingpin examines the relationship between public identity, personal transformation, and the possibility of redemption.
The words Beyond the Kingpin invite audiences to explore everything that history alone cannot explain.
Faith. Family. Accountability. Compassion. Resilience. Hope.
These are the themes that guide the narrative forward.
More Than a Number
848 is part of the story.
It is not the whole story.
